Types of Funds

Every donor or group of donors has different needs and values. OCF helps you to construct the kind of fund that is best for you.  A gift or bequest of $50,000 or more is required to create a permanent named fund.  A donor may enter into an agreement with OCF to build a permanent named fund over time with an initial contribution of at least $5,000 (Step-Up Fund).

Here are some of the possibilities:

Donor Advised Fund

Fund advisors actively participate in grantmaking to nonprofit organizations.  The donor may name successor advisors, such as his or her children, giving them the opportunity to carry on the family's tradition of philanthropy.

A provision may be added to an unrestricted, field-of-interest, or scholarship fund agreement requiring OCF to seek advice from the donor, or persons named by the donor, on distributions to be made from the fund. Advice cannot be binding on the OCF board, but is given full and careful consideration.

Field-Of-Interest Fund

The donor may direct that OCF make grants only for specific types of programs: for example, programs that benefit disadvantaged children, the elderly, or the performing arts. Donors may also designate that OCF make grants only to a specific geographic area within the state of Oregon.

Donor Designated Fund

The donor may name the charitable organization(s) to be assisted by distributions from the fund. Should a designated organization cease to exist or the purpose it serves becomes obsolete, the OCF Board has the responsibility and authority to re-apply the distributions to another similar charitable organization.

Discretionary Fund

The donor may choose to establish a fund to benefit the broad charitable purposes of the Foundation. OCF makes grants from these funds to nonprofit organizations providing educational, health, human, and cultural services to Oregonians.

Scholarship Fund

The donor may specify that academic or vocational scholarships be awarded to graduates (or the equivalent) of a certain high school, high schools in a city or county, or all high schools in the state of Oregon. A donor may designate that OCF make distributions directly to a particular educational institution to be used by it for general or specific scholarships.

Oregon Fund

Gifts and bequests of any size may be added to OCF's Oregon Fund. OCF makes grants from this fund for general charitable purposes in the state of Oregon. Gifts, memorials, or bequests of $1,000 or more will be continually recognized in OCF's annual report.

Oregon Scholarship Fund

The Donor establishes the criteria and the Foundation provides outreach, selection and monitoring of student performance.

Endowment Partners Fund

A charitable organization may transfer all or a part of its endowment to the Oregon Community Foundation to participate in OCF's investment program.  OCF provides assistance and counsel in helping endowment partners secure major current or deferred gifts.  Endowment partners are invited to participate in our annual endowment building workshops, designed for both development staff and board members.
